Chapter 125: I’m Willing
It hadn't been long since the last time they met.
Yet every time Russell closed his eyes, her image floated into his mina.
Russell longed to see Adeline.
Despite being rejected by her before, Russell couldn't resist thinking about her.
He wasn't the type to enjoy pursuing others.
But he didn't want to give up on Adeline.
"And you?" Russell asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
Adeline shook her head, saying, "No, my aunt is hospitalized."
Russell frowned slightly, saying, "But you don't look too good."
"It's nothing," Adeline smiled. "I should be going."
Just as she was about to leave Russell's umbrella, he held her wrist.
"It's still snowing," Russell said. "Where are you going? I'll walk you."
"No need," Adeline instinctively refused.
She tried to pull her wrist out of Russell's grasp.
But he tightened his grip a bit more.
Yet he was always gentle, so even now, she didn't feel pain.
Russell sighed softly and said, "You don't need to avoid me like this. I know what you're thinking.
You just don't want to give me hope."
Adeline didn't respond, essentially confirming his words.
"But you're being too cruel to me," Russell said.
Adeline's heart skipped a beat.
Looking up at Russell, she caught sight of his red eyes.
"If I were to string you along with false hope, that would be cruel," Adeline said softly.
"But you're not me. How do you know what I want?" Russell asked.
Adeline was genuinely taken aback by his question.
"I…"
"If you didn't know that I liked you, would you be willing to be friends with me?"
Naturally, she would.
Adeline had never rejected the idea of being friends with Russell.
It was just after knowing that Russell liked her, she couldn't allow herself to get close to him under the guise of friendship.
That would be unfair to him.
"You're willing, aren't you?" he asked gently.
"If so, then treat me as a friend. Don't deliberately push me away or keep me at arm's length."
His demeanor made Adeline feel a pang of sourness
"Mr. Hunter, why do you have to do this?"
Adeline asked.
He gazed into her eyes intently.
"I'm willing."
Adeline's attention was entirely on Russell at this moment, so she didn't notice a familiar car across the street.
A man sat inside the car, glaring at the two of them.
"Mr. Thomson, shall I go and call Ms. Hensley?" the driver asked cautiously.
After dropping Eleanor off at home, Harrison immediately instructed him to drive back to the hospital.
He knew Harrison wanted to pick up Adeline.
But as soon as they arrived, they saw Adeline with another man, who was holding her wrist...
Harrison remained silent, continuing to watch the two under the same umbrella across the street.
They didn't know what they were talking about.
Russell's tenderness, even from this distance, was evident in his eyes.
After a short while, Adeline and Russell walked away together.
Harrison watched as they approached a car, Russell opened the door for Adeline.
Then, they got into the car together.
A sudden prickling sensation spread through his palms.
Harrison glanced down to see his hands clenched into fists without realizing it.
The driver sat quietly in the front, not daring to make a sound.
After a while, Harrison leaned back in his seat somewhat weakly.
"Let's go," Harrison said.
"Are we heading back to your place or..."
"To Sam's club."
The car stopped downstairs at Adeline's home.
The snow outside seemed to have intensified.
Adeline, while planning to make a snowman later, turned to Russell to express her gratitude.
Adeline said, "Mr. Hunter, thank you for driving me back."
Russell smiled and said, "It was nothing."
"Then I'll head inside now. Take care on your way back, Mr. Hunter.”
After Adeline politely finished speaking, she prepared to open the door and get out of the car.
"Wait." Russell suddenly called out to her.
Adeline turned back to see Russell extending an umbrella to her.
"It's snowing heavily outside," he said.
Adeline hesitated for a moment and replied, "No need, Mr. Hunter. I'll only be a few steps away from the door."
Hearing her words, Russell fell silent for a moment before retracting the umbrella.
"Goodbye, Mr. Hunter."
Adeline got out of the car. waved to Russell
inside, then walked into the building.
Once home, Adeline glanced out the window.
Russell's car was already gone.
Adeline silently breathed a sigh of relief and went to take a shower.
It was quite cold outside, and now all she wanted was a hot shower followed by some time in bed.
In the bathroom, hot water flowed continuously.
Adeline stood in the flowing water with her eyes closed, but she couldn't stop picturing that scene in the hospital corridor where Harrison and Eleanor stood together.
How could Harrison possibly like her?
She must have been out of her mind lately to even entertain such thoughts.
She had managed to stay composed for the past five years, but recently, her heart had been in turmoil.
Now, it was time to regain her composure
After stepping out of the shower, Adeline noticed a message from someone she had assigned to keep an eye on Amber.
Amber had visited a very remote art gallery today.
Other than that, only an ordinary elderly couple and a few students had gone to the gallery today.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Adeline remembered the name of the art gallery and searched online.
She discovered that the gallery was owned by the Hickman family.
More accurately, it was a branch of the Hickman family, considered to be Kaylie's uncle, who didn't have many assets, and this gallery was one of them.
Amber had visited an art gallery owned by the Hickman family. Could it be that Kaylie was behind all this?
But Adeline felt things weren't that simple.
This gallery's connection to the Hickman family was easily searchable online.
If Kaylie was truly behind Amber's actions, why would she choose to meet Amber at a place associated with the Hickman family?
It seemed too obvious.
Adeline pondered for a moment before replying to the message: [Continue to keep an eye on her and let me know if anything seems off.]
(Got it.)
After blow-drying her hair, Adeline slipped into her bed, drifting off into a light sleep for a while.
About half an hour later, she woke up.
Peering out the window, she saw that the snow had stopped.
Adeline suddenly felt invigorated. She put on some thick clothes and gloves and headed downstairs to build a snowman.
When she reached the ground floor, she noticed several children already playing in the snow.
Since it had snowed heavily, there was a thick layer of snow on the ground.
The children's laughter and joy slightly lifted
Adeline's spirits.
She began to concentrate on building the snowman, completely unaware of the tall figure nearby, quietly observing her.
